Guided trip
  • During the Kyrgyzstan Trail, you’ll be accompanied by an English-speaking Travelbase tour leader and local Kyrgyz guides who know the Tian Shan mountains inside out. They’ll handle the daily briefings, help you connect with the nomadic communities and be there whenever you need a hand or simply feel like a chat. During the hikes, the team spreads out at the front, in the middle and at the back, so everyone is always nearby. That means you can walk at your own pace while staying safe.

As the route on the Ak-Suu Traverse is not marked, we don’t recommend hiking alone. Thanks to our close collaboration with local guides, you’ll follow a carefully mapped wilderness route and discover the true spirit of Central Asia. For extra peace of mind, the offline route is always available in our app.

Travelbase app
  • After booking, you’ll get access to the Travelbase app. It contains all the practical information you need before, during and after your trip: advice, tips and everything you’ll need along the way. The app is both your digital guide and your trip-planning tool.

Our advice: download the app well before departure, so all this valuable information is in your pocket and available offline, even in the heart of the Kyrgyz mountains.

This is also where the human side of the adventure begins: 10 days before departure, you’ll get access to the group chat to meet your Tour Leader and future hiking companions!

What are the accommodations like during the trip?
  • Immersion in a yurt (5 nights): This is the true heart of the adventure! During the trek (Days 3 to 7), you’ll stay in traditional yurt camps, sharing the space with others amid alpine landscapes. Comfort is simple and rustic, with mattresses on the floor and a warm sleeping bag, but the atmosphere under the stars is incredibly warm and authentic.

  • Guesthouse and hotel in Karakol (3 nights): To ease into and round off the adventure, you’ll stay in a guesthouse in Karakol when you arrive and during your acclimatization day (Days 1 and 2), then return there after the trek to celebrate completing the crossing (Day 8).

  • Hotel in Bishkek (optional): For your final night (Day 9), you can book a hotel in the capital directly with us when you sign up, giving you a stress-free end to your trip before your flight home.

What are the bathroom facilities like, including showers and toilets?

This trek is a true return to basics. During the mountain crossing (Days 3 to 7), there are no showers or drinking water at the camps. This is adventure in its purest form! You’ll find streams and rivers to cool off in, plus a lovely wellness break at the natural hot springs of Altyn-Arashan at the end of the trek (Day 6).

To protect nature and ensure your privacy, dry toilets are provided at every camp. In practice, they consist of a hole dug in the ground, sheltered inside a cabin with a lockable door.

You’ll have hot showers and modern bathroom facilities during your nights in the guesthouse in Karakol (Days 1, 2 and 8). For the high-altitude stages, just bring wet wipes and biodegradable soap, and make sure to take all your waste with you!

How do meals work, and how is water handled?
  • The nomadic meal pack option (highly recommended): the ideal way to enjoy the adventure with complete peace of mind. It includes 3 full meals a day, lovingly prepared by the nomadic families hosting you, from dinner on Day 1 through the traditional lunch on Day 9 (except for the free lunch at the food court on Day 1).

  • Real, authentic flavours: forget freeze-dried meals! Enjoy generous Kyrgyz cuisine (plov, lagman, steaming mountain soups and traditional bread). It’s the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture while directly supporting the host communities.

  • Lunch packs for the trail: for your midday break, you’ll receive a handy packed lunch every morning to slip into your backpack (sandwich, fruit, dried fruit or a cereal bar, and juice), so you can recharge while taking in the best views.

  • Your own snacks: the meal pack already includes a few snacks, but we strongly recommend bringing extra supplies (energy bars, dried fruit and nuts) to keep your energy levels steady throughout the hike. Once you’re on the high-altitude trails, you won’t come across any shops!

  • Plenty of mountain water: streams and glacial rivers run throughout the route, offering generally pure spring water. Always rely on your local guides’ expertise to identify the best places to refill. Since there’s no such thing as zero risk in the wilderness, you must bring a filtration system (a filter bottle or purification tablets) to stay hydrated with peace of mind.

What should I pack?
  • High-cut hiking boots (mandatory): to protect your ankles on scree slopes and steep trails, sturdy high-cut hiking boots (at least category A/B) with good-grip soles are essential.
  • The three-layer system: pack technical clothing, including thermal base layers (merino wool), a warm fleece and a waterproof, windproof outer jacket (such as Gore-Tex). A hat and gloves are also essential, even in the middle of summer!
  • A good, warm down jacket: bring a down jacket to keep you warm during evenings at camp. At high altitude, temperatures drop very quickly as soon as the sun goes down.

But don't worry, you'll receive a detailed packing list with all the equipment you need well before departure, so you can pack calmly and make sure you don't forget anything.

Who is this hike for?

For adventurous spirits of all ages (16 to 65): this trek is a fantastic physical and personal challenge, accessible to anyone in good shape with a genuine desire to escape into the wild. (Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.)

Altitude is a factor not to be underestimated: hiking at altitude is an incredible experience, but the effort is naturally more demanding. The trail climbs to almost 3,900 m at legendary mountain passes such as Ala-Kul. Thinner air and lower oxygen levels can make progress significantly harder for some people, regardless of their fitness level. Don't worry: the route is designed to allow gradual acclimatization, particularly with the dedicated day on Day 2, and the key is to maintain a gentle, steady pace while drinking plenty of water.

Your first big trek?

Assess your fitness: it's perfectly normal to have questions before setting off into the high mountains. Here's a simple self-assessment to help you check where you stand:

  • Have you done a regular endurance activity over the past three months?
  • Can you walk 15 km with significant elevation gain without major difficulty?
  • Are you ready to slow down and listen to your body as you adjust to the effects of altitude?
  • Are you free from any injury that could make walking difficult?
  • Are you motivated to follow a short training routine before the big departure?

We'll prepare you step by step: do your answers give you confidence? Go for it, you sound like the perfect fit! Starting the week after you sign up, you'll receive a gradual training plan designed to help you tackle elevation gain and altitude with confidence. And if you'd like a trial run, why not test yourself on one of our micro-adventures, such as the Vosges Trail, the Mullerthal Trail or the Packraft Trail, to get your legs ready?

Is there mobile coverage and electricity during the trek?
  • A true digital detox: get ready to completely disconnect from everyday life during the six days of hiking (from Day 3 to Day 8). There is no phone signal or electricity at the high-altitude camps. It’s the perfect opportunity to put your screens away, reconnect with nature and share memorable moments with the group! Just remember to let your loved ones know that you’ll be unreachable for the week. (Some camps may occasionally have Starlink Wi-Fi, but we encourage you to fully embrace the digital detox.)

  • Be self-sufficient for power: bring one or two fully charged power banks to charge your phone (switch it to airplane mode to save battery and access your GPS tracks offline) or other electronic devices. The camps may sometimes run a generator for one to two hours a day, but it is reserved for essential logistical needs, so don’t count on it to charge your personal devices.

  • Safety first: disconnecting doesn’t mean compromising your safety. In these remote areas, your guides always have a satellite phone reserved exclusively for emergencies, so they can look after you every step of the way.

Can I come alone?

Absolutely, and you’ll be far from the only one! Many of our travelers sign up solo. It’s the perfect opportunity to embark on a meaningful personal adventure while sharing unforgettable moments with a community of fellow adventure enthusiasts.

In the evening at camp, life in the yurt naturally creates a warm, close-knit atmosphere. We gather around steaming plates of delicious nomadic food, share hot tea, and celebrate the passes we’ve conquered together. You’ll never feel isolated, unless you need some time in your own bubble.

Since yurts and guesthouses are shared accommodation, there’s no extra charge. You pay exactly the same rate as those traveling as a couple or in a group.
